Google says it might consider including some kind of payment system into Youtube. Would *you* pay for Youtube? http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~3/XgL3HjyAy8U/article.pl ______________________ hai |

Quoting robert_ak:No. If they make Youtube "non-free", people will stop using it. It's that simple. ______________________ |

As if those annoying ads they recently put weren't enough. Google should pay the users (some users anyway) for generating site traffic. To its defence though, they spent a buttload of money on music copyrights. The point remains that if Youtube becomes a paying service, people will move on to Metacafe, Break, and the other services out there. Just look at what Napster has become after it became a paying service... people moved on to Kazaa, Limewire, etc... ______________________ |

Quoting scm:I still don't understand how companies are stupid enough to pay Google to get their ads shown on Google's websites. Isn't it obvious that nobody clicks on those ads, except by mistake? ______________________ hai |

Quoting robert_ak: You can say that for every single ad. Either way, people are generating money from them. ______________________ o hi dere |

To be honest, no, I wouldn't keep using YouTube if it became a paying service.Quoting robert_ak:Quoting scm:I still don't understand how companies are stupid enough to pay Google to get their ads shown on Google's websites. Same thing goes with any web site. The truth is that if most people don't click on the ads, at least the companies have the reassurance that many people would have seen the ads for their products. If Google needs money, it should blame itself for not being smart enough to make some daring moves. For instance, Hulu.com struck a deal with many U.S. TV networks. This means that while their TV series are streamed, Hulu.com gives a reason for companies to buy advertisement space that will appear for a specific show (for instance, a popular show like 24). Now, YouTube should blame itself for having a lack of vision. ______________________ Are you looking for something different than the mainstream media in order to have a debate? Quoting hiddendragon:I'm sure this is, in part, responsible for what Google is thinking of doing. Those guys who sold youtube sold it at the right time. Facebook guy might want to do the same ______________________ hai |

Now, I don't want to be misunderstood. As far as I know, American and some Canadian (that are broadcasted in the USA) TV series are streamed for free on Hulu.com.

Not just Hulu. Fox.com streams full episodes in HD for free to the US for all shows that play on FOX.

Quoting DoomHammer:That's the problem: it's just for the US, unless you're using a proxy server in which case you're slowed down considerably. ______________________ hai |
