So I receive a pop-up ad showing up randomly once in a while despite not doing any surfing at that moment. Obviously, I close them immediately, but are these random pop-ups something that I should worry about? They're not frequent but they do show up occasionally.

Quoting scm:do i smell spyware? check your hosts file with notepad, open "C: Windows system32 drivers etc hosts" (the file has no extension) Post all the lines that do not begin with "#". There should only be one line that says "127.0.0.1 localhost"if everything's normal, run a spyware check ______________________ hai |

I have a line under the one you mentioned that writes ::1 localhost Don't know if this is the problem And live care does not seem to suggest any spyware. I just updated and scanned. ______________________ |

I have spybot -search and destroy program that checks for spyware. It added a ton of listings in the file. Is that normal? I don't get any popups though. And what does this file do anyway? Doomfest ______________________ <Add signature here> BBCode is enabled? OH SNAP! |

On desktop, I use firefox (not sure what's adblock) and opera on laptop. Using IE rarely now since their major security blunder recently. I just blocked all third party cookies from IE, we'll see how it goes, but it's weird that I received on both comps almost at the same time. By the way, the browser title is RON ads by addestination if that's any help/indication. Thanks for replies ______________________ |

you're best bet would be to google that, and also look for suspicious running processes in the task manager
