Quoting Beyond Hollywood:

First it’s, “No more martial arts movie.”

Then there was news he was doing A Monk in New York. Then there was that Tekken movie casting rumor. And now it seems Jet Li has made it very clear (again) that he’s retired from the martial arts genre, making Fearless his last kung fu movie.

From the AP:

SHANGHAI, China (AP) - Actor and kung fu expert Jet Li says he’s given up the martial arts genre for more sensitive fare, Shanghai newspapers reported Monday.

Li told students at elite Fudan University his coming film Fearless would be his last movie of the type since he wants to make more philosophical family oriented movies, the Youth Daily said. “I’ve said more than once that this will be my last martial arts film,” the paper quoted Li as saying.

Fearless, the story of Chinese martial arts pioneer Huo Yuanjia, is due for release next year.

Li was on to be a national champion in Wushu, or martial arts, before starting acting at age 16. His films include more than two dozen Chinese action movies along with violent Hollywood productions such as Lethal Weapon 4 and Romeo Must Die.

Li said he started in martial arts because he wasn’t considered physically suited for other sports.

“The teacher assigned everyone a sport and picked the tall students for basketball and the fast ones for athletics,” he said. “Since I wasn’t tall enough or fast enough, I could only do martial arts.”

Li, 42, said he began taking a greater interest in spiritual matters in his mid-30s when he realized “it wasn’t enough to have a strong body, you had to have a strong soul.”

A practicing Buddhist, Li said he now divides his time between charity work and show business.

Li said future projects could include another collaboration with French filmmaker Luc Besson, who wrote Unleashed, in which Li starred alongside Morgan Freeman and Bob Hoskins, along with Li’s 2001 hit Kiss of the Dragon.

However, Li added he was in talks concerning more than 20 Hollywood productions and will “shoot whichever one comes to fruition first.”

His university talk was part of a lecture series organized by the Chinese Red Cross to promote psychological health among students.

So there you go.

Is he done with kung fu? Probably. Is he going to be in Tekken? Probably not.

That's too bad, because I think there is starting to be a lack of Chinese on-screen martial artists. Jackie Chan is also probably set to retire from action movies too. The only one I can think of right now is Donnie Yen, but he doesn't have alot of starring roles that showcase his fighting talents.

A shortage of Chinese martial artists on screen? Donnie Yen has established a good reputation in the West, that's a fact, but besides him, the Chinese movie producers can think about bringing forward martial artists that are normally used to play vilains or supporting heroes for the pleasure of some people in the international audience who are waiting for new martial arts movies from Hong Kong -- I'm not saying that Kung Fu Hustle was bad -- with real martial arts experts in the leading roles.

The problem is that Hong Kong (and China I think) is not interested in traditional martial-arts movies anymore, their inspirations for action movies are now mostly special effects originating from the West. I, for one would like to see the "no strings attached" types of action flicks, it's what made HK action movies unique and showcased the real talents of a human. For international fans, Tony Jaa looks promising.

Hmm. I can hardly imagine the international movie industry without the Chinese trinity (Jackie Chan, Jet Li and Donnie Yen). Yeah, Tony Jaa is full of promises, but we should hope that the Thai movie producers won't bomb us with martial arts movies that look like these 1970s action movies.

I wouldn't mind, since I wasn't even born yet to see 70s action movies.

I saw one movie from Bruce Lee, which was done in the 1970s, and I cringe everytime I think about that movie called Fist of Fury, because of the absence of organization in the script and the insipid acting.

If this movie doesn't belong in a screen, it won't belong anywhere else.
