I haven't seen all of these shows, but I'll certainly watch Intelligence's second season when will be released on DVD. Secondly, I only saw a few episodes of Murdoch Mysteries. As for The Tudors, I'm not really interested by it. So, even though I really liked The Border, I'll definitely go with Durham County, which I find quite thought-provoking. ______________________ Are you looking for something different than the mainstream media in order to have a debate? TBH I never heard any of these series. I blame this on the government for not promoting Canadian shows/movies enough. That's why so many people in showbiz would rather work in the US ______________________ |

For my part, I seriously don't think that it's the federal government's job to promote our homegrown TV series or movies. In fact, I believe that it's the responsibility of any TV series' broadcasting channel (or movies' company) to make the promotion. Speaking of that, CBC did a great job by creating a buzz around TV series like The Border and Little Mosque on the Prairies. As for CTV, even though it spends way too much money to promote promote American stuff (which is preposterous coming from a Canadian TV channel), the promotion of Flashpoint is not a failure. What's my point? With a few examples coming from a few TV channels, it is possible to get informed about the Canadian content if you catch a commercial, watch the advertisement banner on a broadcaster's web site and by reading the newspapers. As for Canadian movies, you may be right when you say that our own media excessively promotes American movies, even if some of these movies are worthless. This is why I rely on this website to see the upcoming Canadian movies. ______________________ Are you looking for something different than the mainstream media in order to have a debate? Well, if only I was still on vacation I may catch a series or two, but I have a real problem managing my schedule these days. Maybe a good trailer may attract more people and I don't just mean 30 seconds commercial spots. Luckly, I'm pretty sure they can be easily found on the Internet these days. Do you think we should attempt to make series that draw heavy influences from US shows for Canadian to appeal to a wider audience or to have a distinct Canadian product that may narrow the audience? I always thought this is one of the biggest dilemmas concerning the future of Canadian TV series/movies. ______________________ |

Quoting scm: Making TV series with a Canadian flavour has always served us well. Moreover, having that wouldn't "narrow the audience". In fact, the TV series Intelligence talks - albeit in a fictitious way - about our federal intelligence agencies' difficulty to get informants in the criminal milieu and stay in touch with them (will they die or will they dishonour their engagement?) in order to nail drug dealers and criminal bikers from British-Columbia. Despite clearly showing a very Canadian reality (that is not talked about in our media), Intelligence was quite well received in Europe. Secondly, despite containing references to hockey and life in the Prairies, Little Mosque on the Prairies was warmly welcomed by French TV critics (if not the audience). As for the espionage/action TV series The Border, its script (which varies for each episode) is loosely based on real political news topics (because the scriptwriter was a documentarist) that took place in Canada. Yet, the show was broadcasted in France and the Netherlands. As the second season premieres on Monday at 9 pm on CBC, the first season will eventually be broadcasted in the UK, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. So, to come to your point, what do you mean by making a series "that draws heavy influences from US shows"? I remember that many Canadian critics said that Durham County "borrows" (a rather self-diminishing term) many things from American TV series like Twin Peaks (brutal murders in a small town) and CSI (police procedures on a crime scene). Therefore, if Americans did that, does it mean that we Canadians shouldn't do this? Seriously, as far as I'm concerned, Americans don't own the exclusive rights to make TV shows that attempt to be realistic as much as possible. ______________________ Are you looking for something different than the mainstream media in order to have a debate?
