Does it have something to do with a machine that could create a black hole that can kill us all if done wrong? I heard something about that on TV, I'm not sure if this is what they were talking about. If it is, this is not comfortinng at all, especially when we all know Gordon is destined to cause a catastrophe. ______________________ |

Quoting scm:there's no way in hell someone would be able to generate enough energy to make a black hole on earth. basically, its a huge tunnel that accelerates particles in opposite directions and makes those particles collide. when they do that, they see what residues come out of that collision. that way, they wish, in part, to discover the higgs boson particle (right now, it's just a theoretical particle), which physicists *think* is the "gravity particle". that particle is hard to detect so they're hoping the new particle accelerator is powerful enough to do that. ______________________ hai |

Ok. Lots of controversy over this "Black Hole" business. Essentially the machine does exactly what Bobbay said. This isn't the first particle accelerator to ever be used. However it is the biggest and most expensive one so far. This is where it gets freaky. No particle accelerator has ever goten particles to collide at over 0.5c that means they never had one big enough to create a collision with 2 particles moving faster than half the speed of light. With this new system, it is calculated that a particle will be accelerated to almost 0.99995c. This is extremely significant for 2 reasons: 1- It's never been done before and the results are going to be spectacular guaranteed. We can finally, for the first time ever, have physical evidence of our theories of matter traveling at that speed. 2- The second reason is pretty much what Bob stated. We don't have full knowledge of the composition of the atom. In fact most of the things we know make no sense. Something we've learned in high school for example "The core is made up of protons and neutrons" is a controversy in itself because we also know that positively charged particles repel each other, yet all the positively charged particles of a core of an atom are bundled up in the center. Now if you analyze the 2nd reason, you need to think what keeps the protons and neutrons in such a stable state? The core of an atom is the hardest section to take apart. This is where the Black Hole fear comes into play. It's been long believed that atoms are just super small "examples" if you want of our universe. Our Galaxy is "held together" because in fact there is a mass which we defined as a "Black Hole" at the center. The gravitational pull of this object is powerful enough to hold all the suns of our galaxy together on a steady orbit, just like how our sun keeps the earth and all other planets of our solar system in orbit. So you can think of the Atom as being part of the same concept. Where the Portons are Suns closer to the center, the electrons can be suns farther from the center but still held down by the "gravitational pull" of a black hole in the middle. Now obviously, the Black Hole in the center is extremely small (in strength because apparently the volume of a Black Hole is a geometric point). But, if this black hole does exist, to us is just another particle. The same particle the one Bobbay stated. It would explain why large concentrations of mass create a gravitational pull. Which brings us to my final point. We don't know how Black Holes behave. But what we do know is that they can absorb anything. By absorbing objects and reducing them, they become part of the Hole's mass and thus the gravitational pull of the mass becomes stronger. Now this can potentially lead to a chain that will uncontrollably increase the mass of the Black Hole until it swallows the earth entirely. But I don't think the chances of that happening are high enough for us to worry. ______________________
