Quoting damaged:Quoting robert_ak:yes: are you people still mad about the Tibet incident... I'll argue that the western media has a bias against China: They portray China being worse than they are in actuality. While sources from China may be one of the last sources I trust in, major news sources from here aren't that credible either. I'll agree that the human rights issues are not up to standards but the Tibetan protests were just an opportunity to demonize China. Besides, I believe every country has something that people will deem boycottable in... It's just a matter of perspective. ______________________ |

I'm personally opposed to censorship too, but my opinion and others as well are merely subjective. There are others who might argue there is nothing wrong with that... Yes, I'm a moral relativist. Finally, IMHO, olympics is a world event to celebrate cultural diversity, not a political vehicle. ______________________ |

Quoting scm:i don't think anyone could present a serious and valid argument as to how there's nothing wrong with exaggerated censorship. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_censorship_in_the_People's_Republic_of_China Finally, IMHO, olympics is a world event to celebrate cultural diversity, not a political vehicle.true, but by saying nothing, one is basically implying that one doesn't care about that country's practices i dont know what the olympic committee was thinking (or how much they gave them) ______________________ hai |

To a certain extent, there is a certain amount of censorship in every country. The difference lies in the person's or society's own standards. Having lived in "free" regions all my life, I would think that censorship in China is bad (and I do wish it could be improved in the future) but over here, hate crime may be considered some sort of censorship (it's just an example). Though that might sound silly to us, think about a hypothetical nation that was anarchic in nature: They would view us the same way as we view China. Every cultures have its standard, but of course, that's just my opinion. I have never been supportive of their governing party to begin with, but i've grown tired of the endless outcry going on and the exaggeration from the western media. Sure there is in need of a lot of improvement China but I personally believe that every country has its own way of dealing things for better or worse. This is the main reason why I'm opposed to the Iraqi war; we all don't like Saddam and I do feel bad for Iraqis who hate him and had to endure him, but when we say we're good and he's evil, he could have equally say the same about himself unless if he already knew he was doing something bad. My (subjective) philosophical view is that a person/country is bad only when that person/country in question knows it's doing something bad, otherwise "we" are not so different from "them" despite all opposing ideologies. Wow, I turned this into a philosophical essay... Hope i didn't turn this thread into a war zone Last edited by scm on April 08th, 2008 18:11; edited 1 time in total. ______________________ |

Quoting robert_ak: Um... that would be too long... perhaps I can blog an essay when school's finished but I'll give a short opinion about olympics in general... I think olympics are a nice way to settle all nations' differences aside for a moment and just enjoy friendly competition. It is a nice diversion from all the political crap that is going on but I guess all this changed in the current boycott. Also, as I have heard from other forums, boycotting the olympics is unfair for athletes who trained so hard in order to be seek the recognition they have been waiting to pursue. If people were to really boycott something from China, might as well be their mediocre products, but that's kind of impossible in this age of materialism... For a little fun, people should check videos of chinese car crash tests on youtube, hilarious. ______________________ |
