Greetings to users,
Actually, on my personal initiative, I am conducting a study about the reasons why certain people hate to read and since I am the poster, I don't vote. So it's up to you to tell me why.

Cheers,
hiddendragon

i voted other because many of us have been forced to read idiotic books at school, so we have this view that all books are as bad as the ones we read.

Ok well, that should give me some good results for me to build my hypothesis, but I will just ask you to bring more depths in your answers, please, before I can write what I have to say. Relying on my personal point of view, I have heard that many people just hate to read, because they fear that people will perceive them as "bookworms", "people who are wasting their time", "weirdos" or worse, "smartass". So, to bring my explanation to a higher level, it can be said that some people don't like to read, because they are affraid to face social prejudices. Now, to broaden the debate, have you ever feared of being perceived as a "[insert any word you want here]" by people around you just because you are reading a book?

PS: This is only a scientific study. I am not trying to promote reading in any way.

For my part, I don't think people really care about being called a bookworm; I haven't seen many people say this to others.

I absolutely agree with your point; however, teachers are having a bad time choosing a book that will please everyone.

Yeah, I also agree. No wonder why the teachers always take extremely short books when they work in a normal public school. Besides, most of my French or English teachers say that they are striving to find a book that is likely to please to the girls (love novels, maybe?) and also to the guys (a book that is packed with action).

I would actually rather write a story, reading just isn't my thing.

Actually, I do understand a little bit more why reading is not everybody's thing. Speaking about science, many studies have shown that the ability to read opens up a host of possibilities. For instance, children who are read to at home or people who just like to read on their own do significantly better in school. Besides, literacy in all its forms allows for greater independence and especially greater knowledge. According to Justin Trudeau, son of the late Pierre Elliot Trudeau (the former Prime Minister of Canada), reading builds a capacity for empathy. In order words, it gives you a chance to identify with characters.

PS: This is definitely not a promotion of reading. It is only a simple study.

yeah, we never (or rarely) get the chance to write a story of the subject of our choice.
